Sam Welsford victorious on Tour de Hongrie opening stage

In Hungary, the five-day Tour de Hongrie (UCI 2.Pro) kicked off today with a day for the sprinters. On the 166km stage between Karcag and Hajdúszoboszló, the breakaway of the day was controlled by the peloton and ultimately caught with 13km to go. Sam Welsford was perfectly positioned in the finale, made full use of his punch and secured the stage win.

From the Finish Line

“Everyone was quite nervous about the wind in the first half of the stage. Ultimately the wind wasn’t strong enough and so we’ve had quite a relaxed day until we hit the finishing circuit. Hats off the the breakaway, they did a pretty good job staying away from the bunch. In the sprint I had a good position, used other team’s trains and had really good legs to take my first win here in Hungary.” Sam Welsford

“We’re super happy with the win here! Today’s stage was very flat and so a perfect stage for Sam.  Obviously he’s had some fire in his belly with not having the race program he was dreaming of, but it’s great to see he turned it around and had a perfect sprint today. It’s an amazing boost for the whole team at the Tour de Hongrie.“ Shane Archbold, Sports Director
